Canada Goose Launches First Spring BRANTA Collection

The new Spring capsule, which celebrates the intersection of self-exploration and nature, is comprised of 5 limited-edition pieces based on the mesmerizing work of light artist James Clar.

First launched for the Fall/Winter season of 2019, the BRANTA range returns with another stellar collection, this time with the help of Brooklyn-based light artist James Clar. BRANTA, a creative concept built on new-age innovation, which emphasizes elevated materials and unmatched craftsmanship, sees Canada Goose’s iconic heritage reinterpreted through a new perspective, championing the power of imaginative fashion. Inspired by the Art of Light, in partnership with Clar, the Spring 2020 iteration embraces this season’s brighter moments, exploring the connection between art and function, through reflectivity and adaptability. “We really gelled with James from the beginning – his work is based on light but his treatment of it is constantly innovative,” says Karuna Scheinfeld, VP of Design at Canada Goose, when speaking with V about the unique merge of aesthetics between Canada Goose and Clar. Karuna continues, saying “This aligns to what BRANTA is – an elevated collection that reinterprets our heritage with style, distinction, and imagination. It essentially takes the best of Canada Goose and presents a reimagined line of product-driven by innovation through design, functionality, and materials. James was attracted to this idea of taking time-tested products and constructing them in a new perspective.”

Partnering with the iconic brand was a no-brainer for Clar, telling V “A lot of my artwork takes natural phenomena and translates or recreates it through new technological production. Given that, this partnership made perfect sense, as Canada Goose creates apparel that allow us to experience the natural world. Focusing on springtime, our experience of light itself shifts as we transition from winter towards summer. I was definitely interested in and drawn to Canada Goose’s high-quality craftsmanship. The level of detail integrated into the jackets, especially within this BRANTA line, pushes a technology and structural form – which is directly aligned with my approach towards light art.”

Fabrics play a distinctive role in the capsule range, highlighting the various capabilities of the garments featured. Scheinfeld tells V how longstanding traditional luxury was actually one of the many inspirations for the capsule, saying “When we thought about Spring, we started with the most luxurious traditional rainwear fabric: Ventile. Ventile was created during World War II to keep pilots warm and dry – it’s a textile with a rich heritage of adventure. This helped to inform the silhouettes and features in many of the BRANTA styles – the Anorak’s tailoring and the Solis and Helios’ quilting and button closures.“ Reflectivity is one of the standout details featured throughout the lineup, a new material for Canada Goose created to mirror the wonder of light, channeling the same energy from the many works of Clar. “During the day, this material is invisible but at night, the details glow when an artificial light source is shined on it. It creates this nice duality between daytime sunlight and nighttime artificial light, which is enhanced by the fact that the styles are reversible. The idea of pushing a material technology and structural form aligns to my approach towards light art.” says Clar.

The Canada Goose diamond and signature reflective double stripe purposefully demonstrate the synergy of art and science, representing the distance between the troughs on the wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum of light. Playing off the theme of merging different mediums, the five limited-edition styles have been aptly named after the forms of light: Lumen, Clara, Polaris, Solis, Helios

The Spring capsule collection is sure to be one to remember, setting itself apart from the previous collection while remaining true to the core of Canada Goose. “We’re constantly exploring refinement through BRANTA and how far we can push a more elevated and refined aesthetic without sacrificing function or purpose,” says Scheinfeld. “We want BRANTA to represent the pinnacle of performance luxury at Canada Goose, so we use every season to challenge assumptions about where that can take us.”
