Cardi B Engages in Political Dispute on Social Media

The Bronx rapper and Tomi Lahren take it to Twitter feuding over the government shutdown.

It was only a matter of time before two of the most opinionated ladies on the internet took some shots at each other. It all really started on December 22nd, when President Trump ordered a government shutdown in order to demand funding from Democrats for his border wall.

Last week, Cardi B posted a video on Instagram that has since garnered over 15 million views. She addressed her audience of 40.1 million followers with an impassioned message about her opinion of Trump ordering government furloughed employees to go back to work: “This shit is crazy, like, our country is a hellhole right now, all for a fucking wall. And we really need to take this serious.”

The plot always seems to thicken when conservative commentators try to steer the narrative away from liberals in the entertainment industry, as Tomi Lahren decided to do with her response to Cardi’s Instagram video:

Of course, in true Cardi fashion, we get a response that’s hilariously savage.

What’s interesting about all of this is how, normally, with celebrity statements like this, they usually come and go pretty quickly. We know Cardi for her candor, and what’s amazing is her understanding and relateableness, not only at this moment, but all the time.

In the social media sphere, a message that has this kind of staying power is rare. Two days ago was the Women’s March, and, refreshingly, Cardi’s words were being used on picket-signs. It feels incredibly genuine, and it’s a special moment when a woman of color who was a former stripper who was raised in a tough neighborhood can articulate her real and raw opinion and be taken seriously. More of that in 2019, please.
