Since the first generation of Gucci’s silk scarves in the 1950s, the fashion house has witnessed evolution and reinterpretation of the couture item within the fashion and art worlds. With the influence of the Gucci House, silk scarves became, not only an accessory, but a medium for artistic expression.

The 90×90 initiative brings nine visionary artists to reimagine the 90cm by 90cm silk scarves within their own artisanal variations, incorporating five archival themes reflective of the Gucci brand: Flora, fauna, nautical, equestrian, and GG Monogram.

Each theme is commemorative, with a deep threading through the history of the house which can be read in Gucci: The Art of Silk—a book launching in tandem with the initiative. In collaboration with Assouline, the book shares the exclusive archives and rich history of Gucci foulards, from their inception to their current recreations.

Unboubtley one of the most iconic designs is Flora. Its first edition was created in 1966, designed for the Princess Grace of Monaco, flaunting a botanical display of flowers, butterflies, insects, and berries. Through the careful hand of each creative director that has come and gone, the design has consistently been reinterpreted while preserving its timeless allure.

The Nautical Motifs design takes the initial Gucci maritime inspiration of the ‘50s, becoming a pillar of influence to Gucci silks by the ‘60s. Animalia prints and the classic GG monogram reflect the accessories and collection pieces of 1969, while Gucci’s ‘50s equestrian heritage shows up through the Gucci Web and Horsebit symbols.

The artists Robert Barry, Everett Glenn, Sara Leghissa, Currynew, Jonny Niesche, Gio Pastori, Walter Petrone, Yu Cai, and Inji Seo paint Gucci’s silk legacy through the individual artist’s eye—which can be emotional, witty, wry, and beautiful upon interpretation.

The book, Gucci: The Art of Silk, is available on Gucci.com, the Assouline website, Assouline bookstores, and select Gucci stores worldwide.
