The leaves are changing, the sun’s going down earlier and earlier – spooky season is upon us. That’s right, Halloween is just around the corner. In two weeks we’ll all be out on the town, dressed up as our favorite characters from film, television, and culture. Picking out that costume can be stressful. No one wants to see another playboy bunny, but you also don’t want to be so out there that nobody gets what you are. No fear, celebrities are here!

Celebrities go all out for Halloween. Whether it be Heidi Klum’s annual Halloween party or the myriad of fundraisers and charity events, there’s always an occasion to dress up. And the world is watching, so they better have their A-game in costume choices. There have been some massive flops (anyone remember when Snooki dressed as a pickle?), but there have also been some soaring hits. Maybe you’ll find inspiration in the costumes of celebrities, those timeless looks that you can reinvent for your next fit.

Check out some of the best celebrity Halloween costumes in recent years:

For Halloween 2018, the model and Kardashians star dawned a flouncy pink dress and big blonde wig to portray a Fembot from Austin Powers. The look was cute and fun, keeping its style while still feeling like a full-hearted costume. Plus, some metacommentary about the modeling industry! The costume is now more relevant than ever – you could be the next Florence Pugh in Don’t Worry Darling

What’s better than a meme costume? Nobody got bigger laughs than Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade, who went as disgraced former R&B group Milli Vanilli for Halloween 2017. For those not up to date in music industry drama, Milli Vanilli was a duo of “singers” who had their Grammys rescinded when it was found that they hadn’t sung any of their songs. Union and Wayde dawned their best Milli Vanilli costumes, Grammys in hand, and the world cackled.

The biggest expectation of a celebrity Halloween costume is that they commit to the bit. Nobody went for it quite like The Weeknd and Bella Hadid back in 2018, when the pair attended Heidi Klum’s Halloween Bash as Beetlejuice and Lydia. In heavy makeup and jaw-dropping wigs, the pair definitely pulled eyes.

Beyoncé and Jay Z: Barbie and Ken

What can’t Beyoncé do? For Halloween 2016, Beyoncé and Jay Z dressed as the iconic kids toy pairing of Barbie and Ken, with life-size boxes and all. The look is ingenious for how it straddles the line, being both a stellar costume and a high-fashion garment. And those sunglasses? Legendary.

Ciara and Russell Wilson: Beyoncé and Jay Z

Oh, to see one celebrity dress up like another celebrity. For Halloween 2019, Ciara and Russell Wilson dawned matching pastel power suits in a callback to that legendary “APESHIT” video. Instead of the Louvre, though, Ciara and Russell Wilson shot their costume in front of a portrait of the Obamas. Like the original music video, the outfits were jaw-droppingly beautiful.

Halloween is a prime opportunity to make a statement of social importance while incorporating some cheeky fun. No one has achieved this goal like model and television presenter Alexa Chung, who dressed as a mermaid for Halloween 2019. With a plastic takeout bag in hand, the look was not only whimsical and fun but had something to say about our environmental impact.

Ultimately, Halloween is all about making memories and being with the ones we love. That may be a couples costume, dressing up with your friends, or, in the case of Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford, a mother-daughter costume. The pair went as Studio 54 attendees for Halloween 2019, with thoroughly teased hair and shimmering tops. An homage to family, Gerber and Crawford represent all that Halloween should be.
