Central Saint Martins Students Join The Fight Against COVID-19

Fashion students are making scrubs for NHS workers.

As the need for PPE increases, fashion brands continue to join forces by applying their resources and skills to support the real heroes in this fight—healthcare workers. While luxury fashion brands can afford to donate money, smaller brands and now fashion students are contributing by putting their design and sewing talents to work.

Students in the Fashion and Textile Department from the reputable arts school in London, Central Saint Martins, have developed a new initiative to make non-surgical scrubs for the National Health Service. Via Instagram, the school announced their project by encouraging students and the public to support the efforts. “We are asking our students (& the public) to get involved and make scrubs for the NHS…. pattern and instructions coming to you all.”

The objective of the initiative, ‘CSM Loves NHS’ is for students (and you) to make one or more sets of scrubs. The NHS is in dire need and any kind of support is highly encouraged. CSM advises anyone helping to use the resources available to them to make the medical garments. Scrubs can be made out of old sheets or duvet covers or other cotton material you can find at home.

Part of the project includes adding a simple custom touch to each scrub, whether it be embroidery or a tag, the idea is for each set to convey a message of support. It is a way to thank and support those out there risking their lives for a greater good. Oonagh O’Hagan, the Curriculum Leader in Fashion & Textiles, told NHS “In fact, this project is as much about the wellbeing of the maker as the wearer. It’s good to find a way to help when you may feel helpless.”

So if you have sewing skills and your fingers are tingling to help download the pattern PDF here and send a local healthcare worker a pair of your own handmade scrubs.
