Chanel FW19 Pays Tribute to Karl Lagerfeld’s Legacy
The mood for Karl Lagerfeld’s final bow at Chanel was somber, yet undeniably hopeful.
The highly-anticipated Chanel FW19 show began in the only way imaginable — with a moment of silence for Chanel’s legendary designer and fashion industry icon, Karl Lagerfeld. Following Lagerfeld’s death in February, it may be incomprehensible to think of a Chanel Fashion Week show without his incredible vision. For now, however, we can bask in the glory of what will go down as Lagerfeld’s final bow, a romp through classic Chanel motifs with a signature set design that is making us rethink our disdain for the harsh winter weather.
The snow-covered stage paid homage to a French chalet set high in the mountains, keeping in line with the brand’s seasonally-themed shows that never fail to impress and amaze. After the moment of silence, Karl Lagerfeld’s voice appeared over the speakers, a clip from a recent Chanel podcast. The majority of the clip was in French. However, the last line in English appeared to embody everything the designer was after in this final show: “Oh! It’s like walking in a painting!”
As for the collection, it was classic Karl — a mix of legacy Chanel and forward-thinking twists. Billowing coats in signature houndstooth and check prints, feminine sheer blouses, and classic skirt suits dominated the first half of the show. Then, the collection transitioned to a style not yet explored by the brand — a hint of athleisure in keeping with the ski-themed surroundings. Neon fabrics and bright puffer coats proved Lagerfeld is no minimalist, even amidst the many neutral tones throughout the collection. The show concluded with walks by Kaia Gerber, the newest star in Lagerfeld’s cast of Chanel girls, and Penelope Cruz, who carried a single white rose. Though the mood was somber, it was undeniably hopeful. Though it may be time to bid au revoir to Karl Lagerfeld’s time at Chanel, his legacy will live on indefinitely.
