CHANEL Unveils their SS23 Ready-to-Wear Campaign
Inez and Vinoodh capture Kristen Stewart in the South of France
Following a cinematic show at the Grand Palais Éphémère, accompanied by photography by Inez and Vinoodh, CHANEL is unveiling their Spring-Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection campaign. Also shot by Inez and Vinoodh, the campaign features brand ambassador Kristen Stewart in the South of France.
Artistic Director of CHANEL’s fashion collections, Virginie Viard, explains that “Kristen Stewart is the person who reminds me most of Gabrielle Chanel. [Stewart] has a very special relationship with the House. When I first met her in 2013, it was instant… She understands CHANEL clothing so well.”
Famed photographers Inez and Vinoodh share in Viard’s adoration: “Kristen’s body language, whether she’s standing, sitting or walking, is really reminiscent of Gabrielle Chanel.”
The collection revisits a variety of CHANEL classics in modern ways. The tweed suit is reimagined in a raspberry hue and fresh proportions, combining a cropped jacket with a low-waist pencil skirt.
But true to CHANEL’s history, the collection is predominantly black and white. This creates contrast, much like the campaign itself, which juxtaposes scenes of Parisian life—cafés and the metro—alongside colorful vineyards, orange groves, and the Mediterranean Sea.
Bows (which were all over the runways this fashion month) are seen in a variety of sizes and styles in this collection, whether cascading down the hip and thigh or on a pair of shoes.
With sweet details like the camellia flower paired with thigh-high fishnets, the collection is marked by contrast, which suits Stewart’s androgynous approach to style.
Be it masculinity and femininity, or transparency and opacity, the collection’s inherent juxtaposition is what makes it interesting.
The Spring-Summer 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection is available in boutiques from March 2023.
