Charli XCX Gets Spicy With Diplo
The prolific hitmakers lend “Wannabe” a Millennial perspective.
Having made her desire to return to the year 1999 crystal clear, Charli XCX is turning her time-machine dial back a few notches, releasing “Spicy” featuring Diplo and Herve Pagez, a tribute track sampling the Spice Girls’ 1996 smash, “Wannabe.”
To tackle one of the most iconic songs of the 90s, Charli and the latter-day super-producer revamped it with reggae flavor and an EDM beat. The song’s video aptly looks to the future, while not forgetting the past. Using Diplo’s preferred mode of primitive animation, the green-screen-heavy “Spicy” video sees the hitmakers in a subaquatic cyberspace, complete with flying robotic dolphins. Rocking a high, flame-hued pony and braided pigtails respectively, both Charli and Diplo vie for the title of honorary sixth Spice Girl. Check it out below!
