Though it was never released as an official single, Charli xcx’s “party 4 u” is having a viral renaissance five years after its debut—currently one of the most trending tracks on TikTok.
The music video for the song arrives in tandem with the fifth anniversary of how i’m feeling now, Charli’s fourth studio album, which she recorded in real-time within her home during the peak of the COVID-19 lockdown. The moment also arrives in the shadow of her cultural breakthrough: the critically acclaimed BRAT, which has catapulted the pop star to a new career high.

In a handwritten letter shared to Instagram yesterday (May 14), Charli reflected on the album’s legacy and the whirlwind that followed. “So much has changed since then: me, my life, elements of my music, and most definitely the world,” she wrote.
In recent months, “party 4 u” has found new life online—cracking the Billboard Hot 100 and peaking (so far) at No. 55. “I really can’t believe that five years later one of the Angel favorites is having its own special moment,” she added. “So obviously I wanted to do something to celebrate… This one’s for you Angels.”

The music video—directed by Mitch Ryan and based on an original concept by Charli herself—opens with the singer departing a deserted house party in a polka-dot mini dress from ALL-IN and a black Coach Tabby shoulder bag. Outside, she dumps the contents of her bag: a cellphone, wired headphones, cigarettes, a red lighter, keys, and some loose cash. Then, in typical Charli fashion, she tears off her dress, defaces a billboard of her own image with black paint, and sets it ablaze.
