V MAGAZINE What’s your all-time favorite song of the summer?

CHARLOTTE LAWRENCE “Lisztomania” by Phoenix.

V Can you tell us about your creative process when producing music these days?

CL Due to quarantine, it’s just been me, a guitar, pencil and paper, and Facetime. I’ll start with chords, sing gibberish until I get a melody I love. [Then] I write lyrics in and Facetime a songwriter I love and work with, and we finish it together or sometimes I’ll just send voice memos of things I write to other writers and we’ll finish the whole song via voice memo. It’s honestly very fun.

V Most memorable summer?

CL Every summer that I’m able to travel is memorable. One year my best friend, Talita, and I traveled all around France and Greece, exploring cities and oceans. It was magical.

V What is the best thing about summer?

CL In California, it’s the weather! Being able to swim in the Pacific without freezing your ass off is a treat.

V Is there a certain song or artist you’ve been listening to more, and/or “reconnected” with, over the course of self-quarantining measures?

CL Fiona Apple just released a song, which is INCREDIBLE! I love it so much, and it’s made me start listening to all of her music on repeat again! Phoebe Bridgers released an amazing single, Gracie Abrams, Lennon Stella…My favorite girls are releasing my favorite music, and it brings me the most joy. Also, I’ve been really getting into more ambient music to help me sleep and reduce anxiety—Aphex Twin, Goldmund.

V Go-to beverage?

CL Milkshakes.

V What’s in your summer survival kit?

CL Hmm, I’d say my survival kit consists of my passport, bikinis, a sunhat, a book that I love, a bottle of rosé, and ChapStick.

V Have you been feeling inspired during this time? Have you been tailoring your music a certain way? How so?

CL It goes in waves. Sometimes I’ll wake up inspired by the clouds and the nature and the sadness of the world right now, and want to write about it and cry about it and express myself through my music. But a lot of times, I’ll wake up with nothing but the urge to stay in bed all day and watch movies, which is okay too.

V What role do you think music can play during a crisis such as this?

CL Music heals the soul! I think it brings happiness and calmness to everyone who wants to listen. Listening to music makes me an all-around better person, and in a time where everyone is stuck at home in constant fear, confusion, sadness, and outright boredom, people need art!
