“Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams” Comes to Brooklyn Museum

The exhibition traces the house’s history and brings Dior’s inspiration to life

After stops in London, Shanghai and Chengdu, Dior’s exhibition, “Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams,” now has an American twist: being reinvented by curator Florence Müller in collaboration with Matthew Yokobosky, the exhibition opens in New York at Brooklyn Museum until Feb 20, 2022.

At a cocktail event hosted by Dior and Brooklyn Museum for the opening of the exhibition, guests including ASPS, Lorde, AnnaSophia Robb, Ariana DeBose, KAWS, Bruna Tenório and more, all wore Dior and Dior’s Men to attend.

Through the Dior archive, the exhibition takes a close look at the groundbreaking history and legacy of the House of Dior, including over three hundred haute couture garments, photographs, archival videos, sketches, vintage perfume elements, accessories, and works from the Museum’s collection.

This exhibition journey is also a tribute to the House’s successful Artistic Directors, including Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and Maria Grazia Chiuri. For the exhibition, the central atrium of Brooklyn Museum’s Beaux-Arts Court has been redesigned as an enchanted garden. In a new scenographic narrative, the exhibition features several silhouettes on display for the first time.

Starting with the most iconic collection “New Look,” which debuted in 1947, the exhibited haute couture collections exemplify the French couturier’s fabled silhouettes. Only two years after World War II, the French couturier presented the first Corolle collection in Paris to mark the beginning of a new society. Quickly renamed “New Look ” by American magazine Harper’s Bazaar, a feminine silhouette, rounded shoulders, a cinched waist revolutionized haute couture.
