Rei Kawakubo flexed her design prowess at the Comme des Garçons ready-to-wear Fall 2022 show.
The show was wacky and creative, with nearly all-black outfits contrasted with colorful headpieces by artist Gary Card. The theme, Black Rose, was chosen to signify courage, resistance, and freedom. A resistance song from Ireland, called Roisin Dubh (or “little black rose,”) played softly overhead by Irish national champion flutist Ciaran Carlin.

Black certainly was the theme of the collection, which is still decadently avant-garde in terms of shaping and tailoring, regardless of the color scheme. Waist coats and flared-hem jackets with breast pads adorned nearly every look, while a structured, zebra print coat dress with round puffs stood out amongst the whimsical designs.

Other standout pieces include a wool jacket with inexplicably long sleeves and oversized hip seams, a dress with leather puff sleeves, and a jacquard dress with over-the-top tailoring.

The collection jumped off of the quirky styles shown in Paris at Men’s Fashion Week in January, which, though still avant-garde, were muted in comparison to the structured, escapist pieces that make up the brand’s newest collection.
