'Crazy Rich Asians' Tracking for $20M Debut

Crazy Rich Asians, based on Kevin Kwan's best-selling 2013 novel, chronicles American Rachel Chu – played by Constance Wu – as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend Nick Young – played by Henry Golding – to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore, where she learns that his family is one of the richest in all of Southeast Asia.  Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Ken Jeong, Gemma Chan and Jimmy O. Yang also star in the film, which is said to break ground upon its release August 15.

Tracking numbers demonstrate unaided awareness for the film at 7%, total awareness at 48%, and definite interest at 31% with a first estimate of $20 million. Warner Brothers has announced that its own tracking reveals a debut approximating $18 million.

Other recent films similar to Crazy Rich Asians that also showed considerable popularity include Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck, which debuted to $30 million in 2015 and is currently on its way to a domestic total of $110 million.

Mark Wahlberg's Mile 22, opening August 17, compares to Crazy Rich Asians with early tracking pointing to a $17 million launch, unaided awareness at 5%, total awareness at 43%, and definite interest at 39%.
