Cruel Intentions Series Finally Finds A Home
The ’90s cult classic is coming to small screens everywhere, featuring a new set of ruthless step-siblings
If you’ve been waiting with baited breath to hear the latest news in the seemingly never-ending saga of what will become of Cruel Intentions’ TV dreams, the answer is finally here. On Tuesday, TVLine exclusively confirmed that an eight-episode series adapted from the 1999 film is under order from Amazon, with production set to begin in early June.
While the original film focused on the sexual and psychological mischief carried out by step-siblings Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillipe), the salacious new series will swap New York for Washington, D.C., following a new set of ruthless step-siblings and the same devilry and drama that fueled the cult-classic film. According to TVLine, the series follows the two as they do anything to stay at the top of their elite college’s Greek Life hierarchy – “but when a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputations… including seducing the vice president’s daughter.” The adaptation has reportedly been in development since October 2021, tapping Euphoria’s Phoebe Fisher and Gossip Girl’s Sara Goodman as writers and executive producer Neal H. Moritz, who produced the original film.
If you feel like you’ve heard this news before, it’s because you have – sort of. Ever since director Roger Kumble’s 1999 film was released, studios have been clamoring to expand the “deliciously evil” and “wickedly sexy” Cruel Intentions universe, beginning back in 1999 with a prequel series titled Manchester Prep. While the project never made it to air in totality, a selection of those episodes would become the 2001 direct-to-video film Cruel Intentions 2. Following that, NBC ordered a pilot for a sequel continuation series back in 2016 starring original star Sarah Michelle Gellar that ultimately failed to get a series order as well. The film was even developed into a jukebox musical in 2015, running off-Broadway and written by Jordan Ross, Lindsey Rosin and Roger Kumble.
Latest in a long line of nostalgia-fueled reboots, remakes and spin offs, what we know about this Cruel Intentions iteration seems to be promising, borrowing from the original subject’s material in an updated setting. Now, all we need is a cast list – and we can’t help but hope for a few iconic cameos.
