Cult-favorite Brand Hanifa Makes Its Footwear Debut

Founder Anifa Mvuemba dips her toe into footwear with a sandal and a knee-high boot

A few days ago, contemporary ready-to-wear brand Hanifa released its first footwear collection. This new collection features two styles: the Zeta sandal and Zoe boot. The heeled sandal features leather delicately wrapped around the ankle while the knee-high boot features a strap fit over the toe. And while both of these shoes are handcrafted in sheepskin leather, they come in different shades. The Zeta Sandal is available in Smoked Paprika, Pear and Marshmallow and the Zoe Boot is available in Black and Bone.

Hanifa was founded by self-taught powerhouse and CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund recipient, Anifa Mvuemba. Previously worn by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Lizzo and Kelly Rowland, its designs embrace and emphasize femininity. The term “Hanifa” actually stands for “true believer” in Arabic and at the core of the brand’s ethos is confidence. Mvuemba shares that her collections are designed for women who aspire to live their lives without limits – and these shoes are no different.

“I really wanted something unique and that would be special to our customers,” Mvuemba elaborated. “I want the women that I design for to feel like we created something they needed to have in their closets.”

The Zeta heel in Smoked Paprika, Pear and Marshmallow. Retails for $369.
The Zoe boot is available for pre-order in Bone and Black for $659.

And while the brand is known for its inventive designs that can be worn now or ten years from now, the brand also has a unique approach to fit, stressing a size-inclusive approach. Additionally, both of these styles follow Mvuemba’s aim of creating colorful wardrobe staples that never compromise on comfort: “I also feel that footwear should be really comfortable,” Mvuemba said. “I own many pairs of shoes, and comfort is always a quality that I look for with my purchases.”

Other than this shoewear debut, Mvuemba has another first coming soon. On November 16th, the designer will have her first-ever live fashion show at The National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. The label’s Fall 2021 collection is titled “Hanifa Dream” and will be available for purchase immediately following the show.
