Dave Franco and Alison Brie have been making headlines with a number of bizarre public stunts that may, or may not, be part of a larger promotional scheme. In one recent viral clip, the real-life married couple were seen at a Wendy’s sharing a french fry “Lady and the Tramp” style in a strangely intimate embrace. In another, Brie is spotted clipping Franco’s toenails in broad daylight at a public park. There are undoubtedly many levels of wrong with that last one, but honestly, we’re here for it.

While the videos might look random at first glance, there’s some important background to know about the upcoming project the two are working on. Franco and Brie are starring in Together, an upcoming supernatural body-horror film set to hit theaters on July 30. While the viral videos haven’t come directly from the film’s official channels, speculation is that it’s all part of an elaborate marketing strategy.

In Together, written and directed by Michael Shanks, Franco and Brie play Tim and Millie, a longtime couple who move from the city to the country only to discover their relationship threatened by an unnatural force. Tim becomes physically incapable of being away from Millie, and the unnerving sickness starts rotting him from the inside out. Talk about clingy.
In an official release, writer and director Michael Shanks described it as “a film about the potential horror of sharing a life with someone; the lingering anxieties of commitment writ large. It’s about co-dependency, monogamy, romances and resentments — and that at a certain point, can we truly tell where one life ends and our other half’s begins?”
Earlier this week, the couple posed for a kiss in front of a Together billboard at Melrose and North Detroit in Los Angeles, launching a giveaway that invited fans to recreate the moment for a chance to win tickets to the film’s LA premiere on July 23. And in the campaign’s most outrageous stunt yet, the film’s distributor, NEON, has announced it will pay for one lucky couple’s Las Vegas wedding. The catch? You have to propose at your favorite movie theater and post the video by August 4 for a chance to win.
The latest trailer for the film continues the campaign’s uncanny tone too, blending in real-life couple shots of Franco and Brie with flashes of the film’s disturbing visuals. Together premieres in theaters July 30. Check out the teaser below.
