David Lynch Drops His First-Ever YouTube Q&A

Talking Dune and expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

If nothing else is here to put us in good mood during these times of isolation and social unrest, at least we now have David Lynch’s revived YouTube channel to fall back on. The American multi-hyphenate has made the newly launched YouTube page dubbed DAVID LYNCH THEATER to be a designated hub for new content made by the maestro filmmaker in lockdown. The page has previously seen a weekly craft series “What Is David Working On Today?”, along with brief weather report videos coming right from his Los Angeles home.

Now, the legendary filmmaker is coming to us with the first installment of a 40-minute Q&A series made with the help of producer and Lynch’s long-time collaborator Sabrina S. Sutherland. In this video, Lynch is answering a series of fan questions submitted via social media — and trust us when we say that it gets real juicy.

For one, the iconic director goes on to reveal which one of his films he is least proud of. “I’m proud of everything except Dune,” Lynch answers bluntly. “I’ve liked so much working on different movies. It’s not so much about pride but the enjoyment of doing, the enjoyment of the work. I’ve enjoyed working in all these different mediums. I feel really lucky to have been able to enjoy those things and to be able to live.”

Given that he expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement in a weather report earlier this month, the director took the time to follow up on the subject and share words of encouragement with his followers and friends. “I believe that we as a whole world are going through a transition. These so-called bleak times are necessary to go through in order to get to a much, much better place,” he said. “The old way is giving way to a new way. More and more things, horror stories, have come to life and people have been dealing with these things for decades. More things will come out. These wrongs are going to start getting righted. On the other side of this transition, I think, we will find really great times. An end to suffering and negativity. This is what I believe and hope for.”

Previously, Lynch has commented on the upcoming Dennis Villeneuve remake of Dune, indicating that he has “zero interest” in the project. In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lynch said he won’t watch Villeneuve’s interpretation of the story because his own was “a heartache” for him. “It was a failure and I didn’t have a final cut,” he explained. “I’ve told this story a billion times. It’s not the film I wanted to make. I like certain parts of it very much – but it was a total failure for me.”
