It’s difficult to think of another artist who has dabbled in more genres than Nile Rodgers. The music maestro has worked with Lady Gaga, Keith Urban, and David Bowie, just to name a few, across his illustrious career, proving that his mastery expands beyond genre standards. But it’s his dedication to true musical technique and a solid foundation in funk, largely in part to his longtime band Chic, that has solidied him as an ongoing music icon today.

As he prepares to play Coachella with Chic tomorrow, April 14, New York artist Dana Veraldi is paying homage to Rodgers with a limited edition t-shirt that will be available to fans around the world starting this Sunday, April 15. The tee commemorates Rodgers’ numerous contributions to the music world at large, and the fans’ memories of them. But despite calling the gesture a beautiful tribute that he would actually wear, don’t expect him to make a speech about it.

“I don’t think about it like that, I just think that it looks cool,” he says with a contagious laugh when asked about the effect that honors have on his psyche. More than anything, recognition sends him back to earth and reminds him what he set out to do in the first place. “Whenever I win an award, like when I was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I was saying backstage to all my friends, ‘They don’t understand, my Rock and Roll Hall of Fame are all those gold and platinum records on the wall, that’s my Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.’ I care about making music that touches people.”

The live shows he’s currently playing around the world are the most prominent reminder. of just how much his work has truly touched people. His Coachella set should do the same— where he’ll be surrounded by some of his closest friends and collaborators. “We’re all gonna be there at the same time. The day that I’m playing is all about buddies. I got HAIM, I got Anderson .Paak, just finished working with him. I got Jorja Smith, just finished working with her, and she’s got the Black Panther soundtrack. Beyonce, whose one of my total buddies, it’s gonna be insane."

The new DEERDANA t-shirt will launch on the Frenzy app on Sunday, April 15, starting at 11AM PST. Get access to the sale right as it drops here.
