Dion Lee Experiments with Sherpa and Leather for FW22 Collection

The Sydney-based brand makes their bold return to the runway with FW22.

After two arduous years of digital presentations and uncertainty of COVID-19, Dion Lee has finally returned to NYFW with an even bolder, more sexier, curation of unisex-wear. Since Fall 2020, the Australian brand has taken advantage of live-streaming, much like other designers, to present their previous collections. But with the new, relatively normal FW season, at least, compared to the start of the pandemic, there was no better time for Dion Lee to return to in-person shows than now.

Much like their FW21 collection, Dion Lee uses androgynous styles and cut-out details in FW22 but with a grudge twist. The collection also revealed the skin in innocent, and not so innocent ways–a common feature Dion Lee showcases every season. Playing with different fabrics–sherpa, leather and lace–to accentuate the waist and define the silhouette, the collection was presented in a predominately neutral color palette, with pops of color in a handful of looks. The designs, all of which were monochromatic, focused its attention on the folds and cuts of the fabric, mimicking the movement of the body. And the apparel’s details, full of twists and turns, pockets and silver buckles, were subtle yet eye-catching in their own way.

Standing out with the collection’s apparel were the accessories, including the shoulder-length leather gloves that added to FW22’s goth-like appearance. Matching the plethora of corsets and aviator jackets, sherpa-trimmed gloves and heels adorned the collection, along with v-shaped face masks, knit balaclavas and chain strap handbags. All of which were sensual and daring, yet practical enough for everyday wear.

Noteworthy pieces from the collection include a cobalt blue lace gown with a matching cover; a sherpa corset that showcases the waist; a leather bodice layered over a tight-knit dress, resembling armor; and a puffer skirt that was paired with a cage-like top. Everything from this new era of Dion Lee, from its oblique layer to its bold patterns, is current with contemporary trends, but stays consistent with the styles we know and love from the house.
