Dior Beauty’s Peter Philips on Working With Kim Jones

See what he had to say about working with the Artistic Director of Dior Men.

Backstage at Dior Men’s Fall 2020 show, Makeup Artist Peter Philips had only the best things to say about working with Kim Jones.

“[It’s] always a pleasure,” he tells V. “We’ve been working for a long time. I think we’ve known each other for about twenty years. I worked with him when he was a stylist for Dazed and Confused,” Philips shares.

The longevity of their relationship has manifested a level of trust that is uncommon with a house as major as Dior. In this case, it made room for Philips’ specific vision of the show’s makeup: “Half the boys get a Daryl Hannah, Blade Runner-inspired airbrush…fluorescent green stripe.”

The show’s geographic location played a role in Philips’ inspiration. “Guys in shorts with a trench, a bucket hat with a print, with flowers…and that stripe. Very eccentric, very cyber surfer kind of look. It’s a very interesting experiment. The graphic actually came from that. Miami is about color.”

In finalizing his love of working with Kim, Philips compares him to another one of the industry’s greats.

“I compare it to when I was working with Karl Lagerfeld—he’s also very…if you see something, he’s open to suggestions. Kim is the same thing…I won’t transform his show into a makeup show. I can always add my own work without taking over anything.”
