Dior Fall/Winter 2020
The French fashion house addresses feminist awakenings and consent.
The condemning of the patriarchal status quo remains an ongoing agenda for feminism. With the recent announcement of Harvey Weinstein’s guilty verdict in his New York sexual assault trial, modern culture is witnessing the impact of feminist discourse.
For Dior’s Fall/Winter 2020 show, creative director Maria Grazia Churi conveyed a feminist awakening through this season’s collection. Churi emphasized the non-constraining of women through eased silhouttes and delicate fringe — providing models mobility while on the runway. Tailored pantsuits and plaid were also featured within this whimsical assemblage of ready-to-wear garments, enhancing the functionality and freedom of the French luxury house’s designs this year.
As a homage to feminist ideologies, the venue of Dior’s runway show displayed large neon signs with liberating phrases: “Consent,” “Patriarchy = Climate Emergency,” and “Women Raise the Uprising.” The signs, created by artist collective Claire Fontaine, were true manifestations of the #MeToo movement and other feminist statements in society.
