I first discovered the little bottles of Aqua Universalis in a small perfumery in Italy. In a sea of flashy and demanding crystalline perfumes, the unassuming bottles caught my eye: square and largely undecorated, the bottle was only adorned with a marbled dark grey stone lid. Intrigued, I gave it a spritz and instantly knew this was the perfume that I was meant to wear.

I’ve long shirked anything overpowering when it comes to fragrance. As someone with a delicate nose, even a faint whiff of thick, syrupy old-lady perfume sends me into a migraine frenzy, which is why I was so delighted to come across Francis Kurkdjian. All of the scents offered in the line are delicate and unusual, and I’ve come to find that each sits very differently on the wearer. (My mother, equally enamored with my newfound perfume, would steal my bottle from time-to-time, but it never smelled the same on her as it did me.)

While the range is lovely, Aqua Universalis is the one I’ve stuck to ever since finding it that day. I even got a travel set for vacations, and more recently, the just-released hair perfume which I mist on my hair post-shower. The combination of lemon, bergamot, and lily of the valley is the perfect fragrance for summer days but not inappropriate for winters; and as its name suggests, it's universally appealing, made to fit both men and women.

Light perfumes, however, have their downsides; to maintain its delicate qualities, Aqua Universalis does not have a strong sillage (and as such, the travel set is even better to throw in your bag for a touch up during the day) but the end result is still worth it. For those less inclined to do touch ups, there’s a forte version of the fragrance with an underlying musk for longevity. As for me, I’ll be sticking with my airy perfume, daydreaming about summer holidays in Italy whenever I spritz.
