Eileen Gu Takes Home Gold In Beijing Olympics
The Chinese-American teenager broke the internet as she took home her first gold of the Winter 2022 Olympics
Eileen Gu is nothing short of sensational: you can add Olympic gold medalist to her already vast list of achievements: she’s signed with IMG models, is listed in Forbes’ China 30 under 30, and is headed to Stanford in the fall, all at only 18 years old.
On Tuesday, she took home gold in the Olympic debut of women’s freeski big air. The skiing mogul landed the first 1620 of her career, a move in which skiers spin 4½ times while rotating twice off-axis. She scored an impressive 188.25 over three runs, narrowly beating France’s Tess Ledeux, whose score of 187.50 landed her the silver, followed by Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud earning bronze.
Born and raised in California, Gu decided in 2019 that she would compete for China in the Beijing Olympics, a decision largely dedicated to her mother, but met with vast controversy in the West. However, the decision did lead to her becoming one of the hottest emerging stars in China, landing her sponsorships, brand deals, magazine covers, and even being the unofficial face of the country’s Olympic team.
“Going into my first Olympics, my goal is to simply do my best, enjoy the process, and continue to inspire others and be inspired by this sport and everyone in it,” she shared in an Instagram post on February 3.
