Embarking on a sartorial adventure through time, ERL’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection unveils its eighth collection, drawing inspiration from fake futuristic surfers.

In the realm of ERL, their newest collection, aptly named “Make Believe,” bends reality in the year 2176. As the tides swallow Florence whole, the California surfers migrate to Italy, chasing the waves. In this world of higher sea levels, a group of American surfers sneaks into a ball at the ambassador’s house. They rummage through the belongings, adorning themselves in a kaleidoscope of garments and ancient relics.

In this reality, conventional norms are reversed and boundaries disintegrate, shirts are cut like jackets, jackets like shirts. Sequin-encrusted tuxedos meld into the contours of a wetsuit.

While ERL has been applauded for its nostalgic collections, “Make Believe” takes a bold leap into creative futurism.

As ERL pivots, footwear and eyewear categories launch through this collection. The footwear speaks to the surfer and skater youth, while the eyewear combines sunglasses with futuristic elements.

Yet, the allure of this collection extends far beyond the intoxicating pull of its captivating storyline. Its very essence lies in the meticulously crafted pieces, each bearing an unprecedented uniqueness that electrifies the collection as a whole.

With fabric, such as flyweight California silk blends and crystal-encrusted monograms, and innovative designs such as the collection’s shirts that mimic tailored jackets, it is apparent the craft is equal to ERL’s creativity.

“Make Believe” holds on to its cohesivity through the chromatic color scheme. Exuding tonal hues of silvers, greys, and other achromatic colors, the collection illustrates enigmatic futurism in ERL’s hazy reality.

For styling elements throughout this collection, ERL collaborated with a multitude of sources. For jewelry, ERL partnered with Tom Binns to showcase the art of collaging found objects.

Props, from their partners of prop makers and other Los Angeles artisans across the Hollywood film and television industry, added to the captivity of the narrative.

In a collaboration that blurs the boundaries between fashion and sculpture, artist Oliver Herring’s take on an ERL quilt is made from a hand-knit of transparent mylar tape. This visionary creation, resembling a translucent cocoon, astonishingly allows the human form to be visible within its confines.
