Exclusive: Backstage with Isabel Marant

Disparate eras and subcultures merge in an eclectic new collection.

Isabel Marant cast a wide net for inspiration this season. The new collection unites fashion trends of various subcultures and time periods to ultimately achieve a sense of timelessness that points toward the brand’s future. The collection’s central influences are the ’60s folk culture of hippies and Jimi Hendrix and ’90s Gabber culture, which centered around the hardcore techno scene. The former introduces psychedelic and floral patterns while the latter adds oversized sportswear and neon that would stand out on a dance floor. V Magazine presents some backstage shots of the show, filmed in an open-air building on the outskirts of Paris.

By evoking the past through iconic items such as guipure lace tops and boleros, the collection celebrates the way that fashion marks the development of new cultures over time. This also makes the clothing extremely versatile, erasing the border between daytime and evening wear, as well as menswear and womenswear.
