Much like the Gatsby era, the 2020s have been a breath of refreshed air for fashion. Tinged with bits and pieces of inspiration from other eras, many recent collections showcase a bit of a historical element, as seen in Creative Director Maximilian Davis’s Autumn Winter lineup for the iconic Italian fashion house. “The 1920s used clothing as a way to celebrate freedom . . . And that expression of freedom is something which resonates with me, with my heritage, and with Ferragamo,” Davis remarks in the collections notes.

Dresses are set in translucent hyper-feminine silhouettes, with flapper-esque feathered adornments and sequinned embroideries. The contrasting synchronization of masculinity and femininity is married in expansive shoulders, done in rich wool and supple leathers. Tailoring is sharp and precise, and the staple Ferragamo Blanket cape gets plucked directly from the archive and is styled as a safeguard.

Pieces are coated in pops of signature Ferragamo red, army greens, eggplant purples, mustard yellows, and essential blacks, greys, and whites. A highlighted motif of the collection comes in the form of 1920s uniforms. Fishermen’s utilitarian workwear designs are referenced in leather outerwear and thigh-high waders. Fabrications consist of a cashmere wool mix, creating luxurious alleviation when worn, while leathers are unlined for everyday panache.

Accessories include autumnal iterations of the beloved Hug bag embossed in the new Ferragamo monogram. Observing the label’s signature craftmanship, 950 laminated leather sequins are hand-applied creating a mermaid scale effect. A new bag offering is structurally inspired by the lily, the symbol of Ferragamo’s home city of Florence, while the Fiamma crossbody is offered in a new size and painted with a fun shaded animation to reflect the collection.

Footwear mirrors emblems of the ’20s including the sweetheart shape of a satin pump, an elegant T-bar adorned on a stiletto, and an archival strappy sandal. To ring in the masculinity aspect, traditional brogue detailing and monk-strap buckles are echoed into cigarette-heel mules. Men’s footwear offerings include geometric-style derbies and utilitarian booties. Davis’s regard for redefining style at Ferragamo is evident in his newest collection, setting the tone for his continued success at the legendary fashion house.
