FILA Unveils 110th Anniversary Collection
The brand partnered up with stylist Katie Grand for the special set.
This year marks FILA’s 110th anniversary and, to celebrate, the brand joined forces with British stylist and creative director Katie Grand to reimagine some of the sportswear giant’s most iconic designs – straight from FILA’s archives in Biella, Italy. The collection was presented with a short film that premiered this Sunday at Milan Fashion Week.
Directed by Steve Mackey, the video shows models walking a catwalk formed by two giant LED panels that display bright-colored patterns and retro sports video game-inspired motifs. The soundtrack couldn’t be more appropriate: Schoolly D’s 1985 upbeat hip-hop track “Put Your Filas On.”
The video opens with a closeup on one of the model’s nail art, which includes a trail-like pattern inspired by FILA’s logo that is featured throughout the collection. The collaboration honors FILA’s history with sports, with designs inspired especially by tennis, mountain, water, aerobics, basketball, golf, and motorsports styles.
Vinyl-looking fabrics coexist with knit pieces. Jumpsuits are a special highlight, with a variety of red and navy designs that feature a double zipper detail on the front. Another style in blue and green features red and white arm details and a tight hoodie that resembles a swimming cap.
There is also an array of sweaters, including a black turtleneck with straps and buckles on the front that almost form a “V” shape at the back, and preppy-inspired styles such as the diamond-pattern cardigan and a V-neck knit.
Swimwear features thin stripes and organic structures, which can also be seen on the white single shoulder sleeveless top with a red and blue detail that resembles waves and flames at the same time. A windbreaker and pants ensemble comes in a pattern that looks like a deconstructed version of the Union Jack flag.
Although FILA’s signature red, white and navy palette dominates the collection, some styles feature other bright colors, such as the 1980s-inspired orange, yellow and green jacket and shirts that further enhance the set’s retro vibe. Going even further back, thin-striped tennis shirts bring a vintage air to the collection.
Footwear includes sliders and a Mary Jane-inspired pair, along with an all-white version of the classic tennis shoes. Accessories include knit scarves and beanies. Some of the designs feature the collection’s special “110” logo.
