For Stella McCarty Spring-Summer 23 Sustainability Was Center Stage

Stella McCartney brought more of her signature sustainable silhouettes to this season’s runway.

Since Stella McCartney’s founding in 2001, sustainability and animal welfare have been central to the brand’s identity. So much so that the designer has never used animal leathers, feathers, furs, or skins in her designs.

This company-wide ethos has become even more relevant since the rise of veganism, and the push for greener practices has become more mainstream in the fashion industry and outside of it.

Plus, after recent studies have shown that the farming of cattle for beef and leather products is responsible for 80% of the Amazon deforestation, this push has become even more crucial.

Stella McCartney’s spring-summer collection debuted more of their conscious clothing with new visions of how sustainable fashion could be executed.

The show contained minimal and sensual clothing that accentuates the human form while staying chic and classy.

We watched as Light pieces cut from soft fabrics clash the casual with the formal, relaxed Savile Row tailoring is slashed into bias-cut skirt suits, and Iconic Stella pieces become a canvas for Yoshitomo Nara’s illustrations of big-eyed girls.

In fact, the collection, which debuted at the Centre Pompidou piazza during Paris Fashion Week, was majorly inspired by the work of legendary Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. Especially his slogan “Change The History,” which was featured in some designs.

Another major feature of the collection was the Falabella clutches and S-Wave party bags. The S-Wave party bags being made from a grape-based alternative to animal leather, a more sustainable leather alternative than plastic-based replacements.

This Summer 2023 show also included the luxury industry’s first-ever garment made from regenerative cotton, which was a t-shirt.

This season’s ready-to-wear collection was made with 87% conscious materials in total. Stella McCarty’s most environmentally responsible collection to date. Stella McCartney says this runway show’s carbon emissions were kept to a minimum and says the rest will be offset in the coming days to weeks.
