Free Store

Free Store

Tomorrow (December 6th), Visionaire founding editors Cecilia Dean and James Kaliardos, in partnership with Net-a-Porter and Mr. Porter host Johnathan Horowitz's "Free Store" at SLS Hotel in South Beach, Miami. The event is both an interactive art installation, in which visitors are invited to "bring stuff in you can't use, take stuff away that you can," and a digital style challenge—a Windows game that asks participants to "create the perfect look" (winners will receive a prize).

Says Horowitz of "Free Store," which has previously been exhibited in New York and London galleries, "It doesn't have to be an exchange. I don't want there to be any rules. Hopefully some kind of golden rule will just naturally occur and people won't drop off socks with holes in them and take things away to sell on their own."

So far the concept has been a success in that rare and luxury items find their way in and out of the store without any surrounding ill will. The idea behind bringing this market to Art Basel's accelerated economy and all-out party mode is likely to create a stir, especially since we've heard that the store will feature personal items from art stars like Rob Pruitt, Maurizio Cattelan and Marilyn Minter, plus other big-shots like Riccardo Tisci, Michael Stipe—not to mention the hosts themselves. Invite only.
