‘French Water’: Saint Laurent Premieres Surreal Short Film by Jim Jarmusch
Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Indya Moore, Julianne Moore, Chloë Sevigny, and Leo Reilly, the project highlights the label’s Women’s Summer ‘21 collection.
Saint Laurent creative director Anthony Vaccarello and award-winning film director Jim Jarmusch have joined forces and created “French Water,” a newly-released short project that highlights the label’s Women’s Summer ‘21 collection. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Indya Moore, Julianne Moore, Chloë Sevigny, and TikTok star Leo Reilly, the nine-minute film showcases an oneiric, surrealist story set in the quiet moments after a dinner party is over.
A lone waiter (Reilly) watches as the group of women look for one another and try to leave the building – all while suddenly changing their glamorous outfits on the way. Confused and amazed at the same time, he offers them some water: “It’s French,” he notes.
Meanwhile, Gainsbourg makes playful sudden appearances only to then abruptly vanish again, tapping him on the shoulder, moving chess pieces, and even reading a very fitting Edgar Allan Poe quote: “They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night.”
The soundtrack by Noveller and The Brian Jonestown Massacre further establishes the dreamy atmosphere, along with the predominantly purple-hued sets. The cinematic project marks Reilly’s Saint Laurent debut and follows up on the horror-inspired film “Summer of ‘21,” directed by Gaspar Noé and released in December.
