Giambattista Valli, For The Romantic

The French designer brand calls back to an era of Romanticism for their SS23 collection.

They don’t call Paris the City of Love for nothing. For Paris Fashion Week, designer Giambattista Valli comes stocked with beautiful blush-toned dresses, an homage to love. The Spring/Summer 2023 collection brims with florals and painted prints, glittered to the nth degree. This is the peak of romanticism, a unique zest for life.

The romanticism of this collection is most apparent in the colors and prints, blending a sense of glamor with quaint loveliness. Built primarily in pinks and pastels, the collection is bright but not overbearing. Valli clearly has an affinity for florals, with several different types of flowers being printed all over his garments. These florals aren’t overlarge, though, drowning out the garment. No, they provide a minimized sense of beauty to accelerate the romantic grandeur of the look.

Valli is also an expert in accessories and embellishment, thoroughly adding to the romantic atmosphere. Consider his lace dresses embroidered with pink knit flowers, providing a pop of color and a glimpse of naturalism. Earrings are expertly picked to dangle above the garment, and headscarves are frequently deployed to imply a more luxurious, vacation-themed aesthetic. Belts and ties are expertly incorporated, so seamless that they blend into the garments themselves.

Giambattista Valli is a designer first, visualizing fascinating silhouettes that blend against the body. The SS23 collection is an exercise in garment structuring, alternating between languidly draped minidresses and heavily-tailored hoop skirts. This garment variety, cohesive and yet differentiated, proves Valli has a true passion for the artform. There’s a sense of mastery there.

Consider one of Valli’s standout looks, a black sheer skirt with a golden floral bodysuit and jacket. The golden shimmer is opulent and catches the eye, but doesn’t reek of haughty wealth as gold so frequently can. The flowers are intricate and expertly placed, so much so that they begin to blend into a uniform pattern. Still, each flower stands alone in its perfection. Accessorized with gold beaded sandals, the look is a testament to Valli’s heightened level of skill and competence.

This Giambattista Valli collection is for the romantic souls, those who believe in love and its power. Valli himself may be the epitome of French fashion, emitting a sense of grace that remains unmatched. Nobody is doing it like Giambattista Valli, and this SS23 collection proves it.
