Giorgio Armani Introduces Armani/Archivo’s Second Phase

Reproduced archival looks reflect the maison’s evolution from structured tailoring to freer fluidity.

Giorgio Armani is rolling out the second phase of ARMANI/ARCHIVIO. Following the launch of its digital archive last September, the maison has unveiled a capsule collection featuring 13 men’s and women’s looks reproduced from seasons 1979 through 1994.

From the FW1979 collection, a suit jacket drapes over the shoulders. A balance is found between structure and softness, enhancing the feminine silhouette. The original look was photographed by Aldo Fallai and published in Barry Lategan’s July 1979 Vogue Italia editorial.

Fallai photographed several of the capsule’s original pieces, including outdoor work-inspired casualwear from SS1983, a contemporary three-piece suit from FW1990, and a FW1981 jacket reimagining ō-yoroi—ceremonial samurai armor. Fallai met Armani in the mid-70s, and the two developed a longstanding partnership that would permanently impact fashion photography.

Fallai captured the easeful yet dignified masculinity of Armani’s designs. An off-white collared jacket revamped from SS1987 served as an option for everyday wear, introducing freer fluidity among the maison’s precise tailoring.

The ARMANI/ARCHIVIO selections represent growth and varying aesthetics over a 15-year period. A range of inspirations—from Japan in the 1980s to Russian artist Léon Bakst—are drawn upon, but the capsule maintains its sophisticated cohesion. Despite being pulled from the past, each piece is gently modernized, imbuing the collection with a feeling of timelessness.

The capsule will be available starting in early May in the US.
