Giorgio Armani Reminds Us That Fashion is an Industry, But Style is a Lifestyle

In the brand’s SS27 Womenswear show, Armani represents an anti-nostalgic appreciation of its heritage
Inspiration can be a funny thing. Where should designers look when tasked with reshaping the fashion landscape in 2026? In a period of such dramatic evolution, it can sometimes feel as though there is only so much creative ground left to cover. Of course, the avant-garde continues to push fashion into new territory. But for heritage houses with legacies as rich as Giorgio Armani’s, where exactly are they meant to look next?
Luckily for Armani, the house has plenty to work with. Most brands do not have an archive filled with looks from The Wolf of Wall Street, American Gigolo or The Untouchables. Most have not become so closely intertwined with cultural figures like Richard Gere, Julia Roberts and Leonardo DiCaprio. Giorgio Armani is not most brands, and inspiration, it turns out, is far from an issue.

The heritage of Armani is not built on an idea, but on a taste. Referencing the house’s 1980s codes, the Spring/Summer 2027 womenswear collection presents precisely tailored suits alongside richly textured dresses. These pieces are not attempts to transpose the ideas of the 1980s onto the 2020s, but rather an acknowledgement of a winning formula. A true style.
Though fashion changes, some things stay the same. Whether applied to a garment, a silhouette or even a marketing strategy, we often call these things “timeless.” But time itself is not really what matters on a runway, and Armani’s Spring/Summer 2027 collection proves as much. Here, the sharp shoulders of the 1980s are softened and made more fluid, while familiar proportions are reconsidered around the person wearing them. The site of exploration is the body.
