Girls of Now: Charli XCX
What was your biggest moment of 2012?
Opening for Coldplay in the U.S. and Europe was incredible! One time I actually played to a crowd of 65,000 people. I completely lost myself. I felt like a superstar.
How do you feel about the term “It girl”?
I don’t think about it too much. Everyone has their own interpretations of the term. These days the general media uses the term “It girl” to describe pretty girls who don’t really do anything. So in that sense I hope it isn’t associated with me. But in my own head, the term should be used to describe super talented girls, who are kick-ass and amazing and beautiful. In my head “It girls” are the girls who create and push boundaries, not just the ones who do pointless shit. You know?
Who is your favorite “It girl” of all time?
Someone classic like Edie Sedgwick because she was so archaic and beautiful and decaying. Or, someone super futuristic like Yolandi Visser, coz she’s so freaky and I love freaky shit.
What is It right now?
The Bulgarian rapper Dena. She’s so badass and her style is the best. And Buffalo shoes are It for me. I simply couldn’t live without them.
How would you like to see the world change?
This probably sounds cheesy but I would just like to see everyone love more. I made a rule for myself a while ago that I’d only work with nice people. I know that sounds kind of obvious and stupid, but those people are hard to find. So far I’ve been really lucky. Life is too short to waste time on being bitchy and shit. We don’t have that long.
What is your style philosophy for 2013?
Be freaky. Be weird. Be punk. Be you.
Any New Year’s resolutions?
I’m rubbish at making resolutions, I know I’ll just break them.
What are your goals for 2013?
I just want as many people to hear my record as possible. I want to play huge shows where everyone knows every single word and everyone is dancing like crazy non-stop. That would be my total dream!
Charli XCX’s debut album is available in early 2013 from iamsound.
