VMAGAZINE: What is freedom to you?
Whitney Peak: Nina Simone said it best, “Freedom to me is no fear.”
V: If you could travel to the past for one day, where would you go?
WP: I would go back and dap up Louis Armstrong, have dinner with “same-age-as-me” De Niro, party with Prince, and have a sleepover with Nina Simone. All in the same day.
V: What’s the best advice you’ve ever rejected?
WP: Don’t be so quick to trust people.
V: What artistic work do you wish you created?
WP: All the Step Up films.
V: What’s one thing you would change about your industry?
WP: Colorism.
V: If you could be a character in a movie, who would it be?
WP: Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice. Only because I would have been working across Tupac… c’mon!
V: What is your most treasured possession?
WP: My point-and-shoot. It’s an Olympus film camera that my friend Tianna gave me before I moved to New York.
V: What is your favorite indulgence?
WP: Cooking, baking, eating, anything to do with food really.
V: Who do you envy?
WP: Viola Davis.
V: What is the most profound discovery you’ve made about yourself this past year?
WP: I’m very much a homebody. I love time alone and will definitely be the first person to clock out of a function—even if I’m the host.
