Gracie Abrams Releases Stunning Debut Project, ‘minor’
The young singer-songwriter launches her musical career on a personal note.
This week, singer-songwriter Gracie Abrams released her dazzling debut, minor. At slightly over EP-length, minor traces the L.A.-based singer’s recent coming of age in New York City. She’s dubbed the compilation it a “project,” citing the emotional density of the work—eight heart-tugging tracks in all. “I don’t have anything against [calling it an EP], but it feels kind of weirdly limiting,” she tells V. “It’s kind of like an in-between space, and it just felt like the right collection of songs. And, and I guess ultimately ‘project’ is just the language that I’m most used to using at this point.”
The short but complex compilation is an outpouring of emotions, presenting an intimate account of Abrams’s loneliness and self-reflection. “I think that two changes—being alone in a new city [while being] fresh out of a long-term relationship—kind of forced me to internalize a lot of new feelings by myself for the first time,” she says of her recent inspirations. “So I spent a lot of time alone with them, which led me to eventually writing this project.” Her emotional growing pains inflect every corner of the project, allowing the listener a glimpse into her innermost thoughts and feelings.
minor is out now, along with a video for the track “Friend.” On Monday, July 20, she begins a six-date virtual tour, “Minor Bedroom Shows,” starting with the L.A. time zone. Stream minor below!
