Opening March 28 at Sunke Villa in Shanghai, Gucci’s latest showcase celebrates the cultural significance and lasting appeal of the legendary Bamboo 1947 bag.

First introduced in 1947, the bag was born out of necessity—during post-war material shortages, Gucci artisans turned to bamboo, a resource both durable and flexible, reshaping it with heat into a curved handle. This innovative approach became an instant signature, laying the foundation for one of the House’s most recognizable designs.

Curated by 2050+, the exhibition traces the bag’s decades-long evolution, spotlighting the intricate techniques behind its construction and its reinvention for a present day audience. But more than just a retrospective, the exhibition is an exploration of bamboo itself—one of nature’s most extraordinary materials.

In Chinese culture, bamboo symbolizes humility, strength, and resilience, qualities long revered in art, literature, and philosophy. However, beyond its symbolism, bamboo is also a marvel of sustainability—fast-growing, naturally regenerative, and incredibly versatile, making it an essential resource across architecture, design, and craftsmanship for centuries.
