That old v-neck your dad wore for too long. Your brother’s pajamas. Even your grandfather’s pinstripe pants. Those and other household staples are what Hed Mayner revived for the brand’s Spring Summer 2024 collection.
Mayner described much of his inspiration ‘boring clothes’—outfits that are beautiful in their familiarity. With a process of deconstructing and stitching back together these lifelong essentials, the designer debuted his line of comfortable reimaginations on the Paris Fashion Week runway.
Dry and finely tailored fabrics—including plump gaberdine, sharkskin twill, crinkled Tyvek, dimpled seersucker, various stripes, and mohair mixed with wool—form the comfortable base for which Mayner then twists, turns inside out, slashes, and plucks at to create unseen versions of these ‘boring’ silhouettes.
A sheer tracksuit, two-different-sized shirts are stitched together, pockets concealed within a long-sleeve stocking top, glued-together jackets—all resulting in innovative shapes that blend comfort and the unknown.
Mayner’s exploration of weight and flow comes through in many of the pieces, from multiple multi-pocket vests on top of one another becoming immense luggage for the wearer, to a jacket with the volume set in the front, so that the wearer sweeps back onto themselves.
While seemingly abstract and fantastical, Mayner maintains that the collection is not dramatic in any way, nothing more than new excitement from classics. The lineup acts as an opportunity to have fun and play around with pieces many of us grew up with.
