Hedi Slimane To Hold First Solo Exhibition in Nearly Seven Years

The Shanghai exhibition “Sun of Sound” will also mark the Celine artistic director’s first solo presentation in China.

Photographer and Celine’s artistic director Hedi Slimane is set to present a solo exhibition of his work at the Almine Rech in Shanghai. Titled “Sun of Sound,” the show marks the artist’s first solo presentation since his “Sonic” exhibit at the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent in Paris in 2014, as well as his first solo exhibition in China.

“Sun of Sound”’s main focus will be the “Sonic” series, in which Slimane photographed legendary musicians such as Lou Reed, Keith Richards, Brian Wilson, and Amy Winehouse. “Slimane has invented a new and oblique visual language to represent youth and reinvent the documentation of rock,” reads a statement published on the gallery’s website. “In his work, live performance is reduced to a minimal, photographic lexicon—a ritual, black-and-white convention of signs.”

The exhibition will also include works from Slimane’s 2003 “Berlin” series, photos of various places and people he took while living in the German capital that were later made into a book published by Karl Lagerfeld in his EDITION 7L project and shown at KW – Institute for Contemporary Art, in Berlin, and at MOMA P.S.1, in New York City.

“I’ve always taken pictures, almost like some people take notes or write down their thoughts,” Slimane said in a press statement.

Other features will be the 2005 series “London, Birth of a Cult,” which chronicles the daily life of The Libertines’ frontman Pete Doherty before he rose to rockstar status, and an immersive sound installation highlighting Slimane’s exploration of music.

“Music has a sense of freedom that continues to inspire me,” Slimane said in the statement. “I have never found anything else that has the same capacity to impact on popular culture.”

“Sun of Sound” will run from March 19 to April 30.
