Henrik Vibskov Goes to Outer Space for Fall/Winter 2022
The Danish label merged futuristic-inspired pieces with divine tailoring know-how.
With billionaires venturing to far off locales and corporations exploring technology’s latest inventions, the future—in all its uncertainty—is closer than we all expected. Now, society’s undying fascination with the Metaverse has hit its latest frontier: the runways of Copenhagen Fashion Week. For Danish designer Henrik Vibskov, that obsession was seen throughout the slinky colored pleats and oversized silhouettes of his most recent collection titled ‘Biblioteca of Micro Selves.’
Referencing a phenomena the brand labeled ‘future archiving,’ Vibskov was intent on crafting a sartorial language that walks a fine line between Space Age expertise and modern delectability. Toying with ideas of the future, Vibskov decorated the show space with vacuum sealed items that he and his team would carry during space travel. Vibskov’s item, a sealed box of his baby teeth, certainly proved his knack for creating circus-meets-performance runway spectacles.
As always, Vibskov’s streamlined workwear took center stage throughout the collection, placing a focus on versatility and intricate textile play. Futuristic without being overly avant-garde, the Dane contextualized his referential Space Age aesthetic by incorporating everyday design notions—layered tailoring, utilitarian pockets, and more—that felt both fashionable and fantastical.
Interlaced throughout Vibskov’s intelligent separates were playful intarsia sweaters and cocoon-like outerwear that were simultaneously nostalgic and undoubtedly fresh. Platform high tops tied with utility rope were ubiquitous on the runway, and invoked both tried and true sneaker silhouettes while also toying with unexplored shapes.
Though Vibskov is clearly enamored by the future, his designs feel level-headed, and not far off. The designer’s tailoring chops and eye for wearable, organic shapes certainly challenge the ways in which the industry has been embracing the Metaverse at full speed.
