Here are All of the 2021 American Music Award Nominations
Surprisingly to absolutely no one, first-time nominee Olivia Rodrigo already has the most nominations with seven.
The American Music Awards are returning in just a few weeks, and we finally have a list of the 2021 nominations. Airing live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Nov. 21, the nominations are comprised of everyone’s favorite music stars with little to no surprises. Nominations come from the statistics of listeners, like from streaming, album sales, song sales, radio airplay, and social media engagement. Tracked by Billboard and its data partner MRC Data, the numbers were watched from Sept. 25, 2020 through Sept. 23, 2021.
Leading the pack, we have V132 Cover Star Olivia Rodrigo with seven nominations, including Artist of the Year, New Artist of the Year, and Favorite Pop Album for SOUR, and it’s only her first AMAs. She could potentially break the record for most wins for a first-time nominee if she wins five or more of her awards. Falling just behind Rodrigo are The Weeknd with six nominations, and Bad Bunny, Doja Cat, and Giveon with five each. Taylor Swift has received her eighth AMAs nomination, this time for Artist of the Year, where Drake received his fifth nomination in that category, and Ariana Grande and The Weeknd, their fourth. Right now, Swift has the most Artist of the Year wins, six, and the most AMA wins overall, 32, according to Billboard.
Morgan Wallen, however, managed to receive two nominations despite the video of him using a racial slur surfacing this past spring, for which he later apologized. MRC Live & Alternative released a statement explaining that Wallen’s nominations are based on charting, and that he will not be involved in this year’s show at all.
“We plan to evaluate his progress in doing meaningful work as an ally to the Black community and will consider his participation in future shows,” the statement read.
Brand new to the 2021 awards, the AMAs have added three new categories this year: Favorite Trending Song (shout out to TikTok for this one), Favorite Gospel Artist, and Favorite Latin Duo or Group. However, three nomination categories from last year have been removed: Favorite Social Artist (won by BTS), favorite artist – adult contemporary (the Jonas Brothers), and Favorite Soundtrack (Birds of Prey: The Album).
In an effort to add more awards honoring artists in the Latin field, there are now five awards up for grabs, the same as pop and country. There are four awards each for hip-hop and R&B, and one each for rock, inspirational, gospel, and dance/electronic music.
Voting is now open through Nov. 16, and fans can vote either by going to Billboard.com/AMAsVote or, for the first time, by typing “AMA” and other key phrases into the search bar of the TikTok app. Remember, you can only vote once per category per day.
Watch all your favorite artists win live on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, or buy tickets to the show that are on sale now at AXS.com.
