How To Keep Up With The Election Today

Buckle up!

Today is election day. There are a number of important races on the ballot, most importantly for the president and the senate. Though many Americans have already cast their votes, some are still lining up at their polling stations, and at least a few important counts should be in tonight.

The enormous increase in mail-in voting means that we likely won’t know the final results of the election by the end of the day. But, some key swing states, like Florida, allow mail-in ballots to be counted ahead of time, so we may have a general idea of where a few states are headed. It’s also important to note that there is a strong partisan divide this election in voting method. Most democrats chose to vote by mail or early, while republicans are largely voting in person today. Depending on which type of ballot is counted first, states may appear to skew sharply in one direction or the other, before settling once all votes are in.

With these things in mind, watching election coverage today will still provide some very useful insight. All major stations will be broadcasting coverage, alongside prominent newspapers, like The New York Times or The Washington Post that often have live election updates running on their sites.

Polls begin closing at 7pm ET. Before this time, CBS and CNN will be providing all day coverage. At 7pm, stations will have shifted to their results coverage. Most stations, including CNN, NBC, and ABC are forgoing any subscription requirement to provide election coverage for free through their websites.

For those who prefer a spoonful of sugar with their medicine, a couple comedians are providing their own election updates. Stephen Colbert’s Late Show will be hosting a 12 hour election day stream titled ““A LATE SHOW’s Pre-Show: Hoping for the Best …” featuring a number of celebrity guest. As per usual, The Daily Show, now hosted by Trevor Noah, will also be going up at 11pm ET to wrap up the night.
