Imitation Of Christ Skates Into A New Era

Imitation of Christ returns with a collection that centers female empowerment.

Resilience is both an aspiration and a necessity for individuals living through what seems like an endless number of tragedies. Tara Subkoff, the creative force behind Imitation of Christ, decided to show exactly what grit looks like in her latest show. She enlisted a crew of female skaters to model her upcycled designs. Skateboarding, as any kid on the block will tell you, involves even more falling down than it does flying high. The difference between a great skater, and someone who merely keeps their board around for decoration, is how many times you’re willing to get back up off the pavement.

Yesterday, the girls took a spin around a Los Angeles skate park, adorned with Imitation of Christ’s Spring 2021 Ready-To-Wear collection. A simultaneous show took place in New York, resulting in a “bi-coastal presentation” complete with a capella singers.

The designs are now available for purchase from The RealReal, a luxury resale site, where Subkoff sourced some of her fabrics. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future. The organization is led by a collective of students fighting for climate action.
