In the Stables with Stella McCartney

Models walk amongst ponies in the designer’s ode to equestrian aesthetics.

Stella McCartney loves love. From a mother’s love to the love of animals, everything the designer loves is explored in her collection for Fall-Winter 2023. Especially her love of horses.

Unveiled at France’s oldest riding school, the Manège de l’École Militaire, the show counted on the appearances by ponies, provided by renowned horse rescuer Jean-Francois Pignon. But the equestrian references didn’t end there. Rope detailing on low-cut black gowns is reminiscent of a horse’s bridle, while equine-inspired jacquards splash across thick, curly wool coats. McCartney’s first horse, Harmony, serves as the muse of the color palette for a series of earth-toned lined coats, scarves, and cape sweaters.

Horse imagery also makes an appearance on photographic jacquard polo shirts, while an eco-friendly viscose and wool blend makes up a knit set, also covered in horse prints. A black Fur Free fur jumper proudly displays a textural horse, colored in a vibrant shade of lipstick red.

Equestrian influences resurface towards the end of the collection, as a sequence of minimal, breezy slips transform into a canvas for the late Linda McCartney’s photography. Honoring her mother’s images, the designer once again pairs her love for horses with her own designs, resulting in effortlessly elegant slips.

The iconic Falabella bag, adorned with various silver, gold, and painted chains, adds a pop to minimalist looks, while S-wave bags merge quality craftsmanship, leading innovation, and, of course, vegan luxury. Championing conscientiousness and sustainability, this collection marks Stella McCartney’s most conscious Fall-Winter showing yet.

Using 89% responsibly sourced materials, the collection also brought eco-friendly innovation to the runway. Luxury handbags crafted from a plastic-free, plant-based leather alternative known as MIRUM, made their long-awaited debut, as Frayme totes were made from AppleSkin, a material created out of the food industry’s apple waste. Talk about showing love to the world around you.
