We all have that friend who we cherish dearly, but their Instagram is so mind-numblingly boring, annoying, or overwhelming (or all three) that it actively ruins your scrolling experience. Finally, the social network is providing a solution that relieves us of our pain without inflicting some more on that person. Soon, you will be able to mute people on the the app, meaning that their posts or stories will not appear on your timeline, but their account will not be blocked or unfollowed. They won't know that you muted their posts, so your friend will keep living their happy Instagram life and not annoy you while doing so. You can still view posts on their profile, and you can receive notifications if they tag you in their posts.

The company said the added feature will be helpful for conquering "complex social dynamics" on the app, which frankly, is an understatement. Aside from the major benefit of keeping meaningful friendships or good connections with work acquaintances without having to suffer emotionally, this new feature also means that you can create a feed that's most customized to your liking. By specifically choosing which accounts appear on your timeline, you can have a more consistent Instagram experience and only see the things that interest you, whether it be fashion, dogs, or passionate fan accounts (or, you know, your actual friends). This feature has previously been implemented into Instagram Stories and Facebook, and has been a big request from users since the app's inception.

Muting a user is as simple as can be. Once the feature is rolled out, you'll simply be able to click the "..." menu next to one of their posts and tap the "mute" button to silence them on your feed for as long as you'd like. If you'd like to mute their story but not their posts, you can go to the "..." menu on their profile page, where that option will appear. Naturally, you can un-mute people at any time if their feed happens to grow more tolerable or they somehow find out about your muting shenanigans. There's no word yet on when we can expect the mute button on everyone's screen, but it's sure to make for a much cleaner and freer Instagram once it appears.
