Gregory Chester is the archivist behind @oneofakind.archive, an Instagram account dedicated to documenting the most rare and intriguing fashion pieces of the past six decades. The account goes hand-in-hand with his own collection at the One of a Kind fashion archive in London.

In conversation with Dazed, Chester said, “Apart from searching online, we have a small library of rare fashion books, magazines, lookbooks and significant show invites, I prefer to source images physically as you can always find something a Google search cannot offer."

From Miu Miu’s SS 2000 purple slingback sandals or Jean Paul Gaultier’s glove bag to Vivienne Westwood’s Voyage to Cythera FW 1989 collection and McQueen’s FW 1996 lilac corset, the account explores cult fashion moments, some of which have been featured in exhibitions at the Barbican Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. One of a Kind’s archive has packed in 5000 fashion treasures since opening 23 years ago. In-house archivists can pull looks together for events, films, magazine editorials or the average consumer with a lot of cash.

“It’s basically a fan account for the best fashion in the past 60 years which goes hand in hand with what we research, collect and sell at our physical archive,” Chester said. “It began as a place to share our collection and interesting archive imagery which is relevant today, it shows vintage in a new light without all the horrible stereotypes and styles usually associated with vintage.”

The account traces fashion history not just through iconic pieces, but also shoes and wigs, including hair by Alain Pichon AW 2002. Chester puts in the detective work to find these pieces: “Apart from searching online, we have a small library of rare fashion books, magazines, lookbooks and significant show invites, I prefer to source images physically as you can always find something a Google search cannot offer.”
