Introducing SELF 07 a New Art Exhibition by Saint Laurent

Focusing on six different cities, the new chapter is determined to connect the world by blending creative disciplines.

Saint Laurent’s latest installment of SELF is here. SELF–curated by Anthony Vaccarello–as a whole, spotlights a select group of artists, photographers, and filmmakers celebrating aspects of Saint Laurent through their personal lens.

However, this rendition titled SELF 07 is comprised of exclusive photographic artworks by six members. Some of which include Magnum Guest Photographers such as Daesung, Takashi, and Birdhead, from the international photographic co-op. Centering on the values of Saint Laurent, the artworks will be showcased in six different cities from June 9th to the 12th across the globe.

See below to learn more about the six photographers.

Alex Webb | New York

Having received numerous awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship and work exhibited at museums like the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, Alex Webb is not shy from documenting the city. I’ve long been drawn to the brilliant color, searing light, and intensity of life that I first encountered in the streets of Latin America and the Caribbean,” said Webb, who’s known for his vibrant photographs. Bringing three culturally-rich neighborhoods of Los Angeles to the stage, he brings movement and light to the forefront.

Harry Gruyaert | Paris

A member of Magnum Photos since 1982, Antwerp-born Harry Gruyaert developed a representation for his photographic work on color, having worked extensively in the U.S., Europe, and India and having numerous publications. For SELF 07, airports were the point of reference, as they “give this very strong impression of being between two worlds.” Having always been fascinated by airports, Gruyaert’s entry for SELF imposes his strengths and adaptability through his plays with light and color, no matter the environment.

Olivia Arthur | London

Inspired by the human relationship with our bodies, the London-based photographer showcases how she looked “to show the way we touch, connect, and relate to each other” and “an exploration of the physical world in natural and unnatural forms is also key for me in showing the limits of our physicality.”

Takashi Homma | Tokyo

For Takashi Homma, the city is intrinsically tied to fashion. For Homma, the city of Tokyo is what “constrains and guides” his actions. Using the camera obscura technique, the Kimura Ihei Award winner finds that “The city and fashion are always in a one-to-one relationship.”

Daesung Lee | Seoul

Growing up in a rural village, Daesung Lee is known for his approach to documenting environmental issues, playing between fiction and reality in his photography. For SELF 07, Lee took inspiration from the pandemic after the world was forced to halt, stating, Nature gave us back all the forgotten senses,” and that since the period, SELF was a means to explore “an imaginary nature in my mind to stand the uncertain future.

Birdhead | Shanghai

Consisting of artists Song Tao and Ju Weiyu, Birdhead is a concept working beyond the philosophy of photography. In the signature style of “Birdhead World,” the Shanghai-based artist explores the symbiotic relationships that exist in nature for SELF 07, focusing on the natural elements like clouds and trees juxtaposed against the hardline of the cityscape.
