Isabel Marant Complicates Simplicity for SS27

Kim Bekker’s latest collection layers lace, nostalgia and sensuality

The Isabel Marant girl is casually modish: her silhouettes are simple, but never quite as they seem. For Summer 2027, Creative Director Kim Bekker delivered a collection that feels quintessentially, well… Marant, layering classic silhouettes with lace, complicating the simple and making the familiar feel new.

The starting point was a series of photographs by Sam Haskins. Taken in the 1960s, Haskins’ images captured women, dressed and undressed, through layers of hazy light. Yet beneath the softness of the imagery, their strength and sensuality remained unmistakable.

That tension between strength and sensuality, obscured beneath a veil of haze, became the collection’s central idea. Familiar silhouettes, from simple tees to board shorts, were rendered unexpectedly intricate. Delicate lace and antique tablecloth linen adorned pieces that, in another context, might have been considered unadorned.

Where recent trends have turned our attention back to 2016, Marant ventured a few years further into the past. Short, floaty dresses came layered in hand-drawn floral prints, echoing the Summer 2013 collection. The result was nostalgic without feeling retro, romantic without becoming overly sweet.

Accessories, meanwhile, spoke a distinct language of their own. High basket-weave ankle boots grounded the looks, while slouchy, plaited bags hung casually from the shoulder.

For those aspiring to channel the Isabel Marant girl, look no further. Summer 2027 lays out the blueprint: classic and nostalgic, yet still fresh. Marant has perfected the formula; the rest is up to you.
