Isabel Marant Evokes the 60s With Fall/Winter ’21 Collection

The French designer resurrects and reimagines subculture and genre in a digital presentation at Paris Fashion Week.

In a cataclysmic collision of colors, silhouettes and prints, Isabel Marant channels 60s icons and the overlap between eras with the Fall/Winter 2021 collection, debuted in a digital runway at Paris Fashion Week.

Fast-paced, energetic and divine, a concrete playground on the outskirts of Paris becomes the runway on which Hendrix and Joplin are echoed in an evocation of subculture, a recollection of memories revisited and made anew by the French designer.

Folk meets liberty meets psychedelic and techno; between the layers of trend and genre is the season’s collection, an ode to the parties of the past, to raw, versatile urban uniforms. Boldness is amplified and embellished, contrasted with multicolored florals; electric blue, iridescent vinyl fabrics are nights in the city, a new vision just beyond the horizon, while cowboy boots are paired with sportswear pieces and colored yokes in a faded memory of the past, refurbished and saturated from sepia.

Marant’s collection is edgy, upscale and feminine, a rebellion against delicacy and a celebration of raw craftsmanship. Tinged with an undercurrent of masculinity, dresses, trousers, blouses, skirts and outerwear are in a cream-colored palette dotted with hues of bright fuschia, crimson and cyan, deepening into tones of midnight and plum as daywear becomes nightwear. A story of premeditated recklessness is told, pieced together from 60s inspiration, narrated by embellished belts and guipure tops, shearling boleros and leather coats.

As a whole, the collection is a seamless transition from subculture to mainstream, an elevated, refined taste of the grunge era. Standout looks include a V-neck, full-length velvet dress recalling glam rock ‘n’ roll, an exaggerated, double-breasted gray overcoat, a vinyl crimson jumpsuit with button fastenings and a crisp, trim pair of leather shorts, cinched at the waist and wide in the legs.
