Isabel Marant’s Return to Form

For Paris Fashion Week, Isabel Marant returns to its classic silhouettes.

Paris Fashion Week seems to be a homecoming of sorts for Isabel Marant, returning to their iconic looks of yesteryears. For their Spring/Summer 2023 collection, the luxury brand has amassed a collection of classic garments, calling back to years of brand history. These looks are not carbon copies, though – they’re new, innovative takes on their more established thoughts. It’s a callback to all that Isabel Marant has been, but also all that they could be.

Since Isabel Marant’s founding in the ‘90s, the brand has been a staple of elegant womenswear. You might remember their classic Étoile line from 1999 or their 2014 H&M collaboration that sold out in 45 minutes and crashed the retailer’s website. The Isabel Marant name has seen multitudes and has created hundreds of classic garments. Now, the brand returns to its roots.

Built-in a palette of beiges, off-whites, and blacks, the Isabel Marant SS23 collection is sleek and clean. Looks stand out not in their maximalism or bawdiness, but rather in their crisp perfection. As is true of all Isabel Marant garments, the line maintains certain wearability. These classic silhouettes are approachable but upper-crust, every day but one-of-a-kind.

The collection is allowed some creative liberties when it comes to pairings, putting oddball combinations first. A general collection theme is the intersection of fragility and toughness, using separate patterns and natural features to embody both of these aesthetics. Angular crocheted pieces are matched with the softness of skin, and leather is fixed with silk. These pairings provide some depth to the collection.

A brand retrospective also allows for some variation in the era of inspiration. While much of the collection is based in Isabel Marant’s ‘90s silhouettes, the collection also plays with some fun Y2K theming. Low-rise pants, open necklines and faded camo prints immediately remind the viewer of that fated time in fashion history.

The Isabel Marant SS23 collection is made for the elegant, put-together fashion enthusiast. Looks are pristine ad infinitum and emanate a sense of luxury and taste. For those who like the spectacle of fashion, thinking of a runway collection as more of an art show, maybe this collection isn’t for you. But, for those who think in practical terms, this collection is built for your wardrobe.
